At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
