Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined term emerged several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies each claim it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted togetherness has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
