Leeds Keep The Reds at Bay to Secure Valuable Point at Anfield
Two unbeaten runs continued intact at Anfield, however only one side could take genuine contentment from the result. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook game plan of frustrating and restricting the hosts, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign underscoring the persistent issues within the current title holders' recent recovery.
Defensive Masterclass Earns Crucial Point
A lacklustre goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely due to the immense solidity of the excellent centre-back pairing Struijk and Bijol, combined with the Anfield side's inability to unlock a well-drilled Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to speculative half-chances, and a sprinkling of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the final whistle on a sluggish performance.
"Should I don't use the whole squad and we have a schedule like this, I would never make changes," Daniel Farke explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his past couple of years was difficult. He is in red-hot form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."
The Hosts' Frustration in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more zip and sharpness than in recent outings, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the flank. However, clear-cut opportunities were scarce. Their primary moments in the opening period fell to striker Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the France forward cut inside and drew a save from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper could not hold the effort, needing a timely block from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz converting the rebound.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his appeals for a penalty were waved away.
Missed Opportunities Are Costly
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he failed to find the target with his clearest opening. Connecting with a swift Frimpong cross in the six-yard box, the attacker misdirected a header that hit the Perri while facing an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable opportunity came from an Alisson error. The experienced keeper played a careless clearance straight to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort returned towards goal was gathered by the alert Alisson.
Scrappy Final Stages
The match descended into a bitty encounter, low on incident. The midfielder, back from a ban, forced a save from Perri from distance. The resulting rebound led to Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a free-kick in a dangerous area, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot introduced a three substitution to inject urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his side in ahead from a corner, his header bouncing just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring streak for the visitors in the closing stages, but his finish was ruled out for a tight offside call. Ultimately, both teams had to accept a share of the spoils.
