New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
