A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have taken place, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building managing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and wearing what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Key evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to find their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, a close relative, said the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were ready to discuss. This is a devastating blow."

She urged the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's three sons.

A senior figure commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.

"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even criticized me and my decisions as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," the minister added.

A public representative stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
