Supporters Call for Arrest of Individual Who Seized Ariana Grande
Loyal followers of the pop star are demanding that a man who leaped a barrier and seized the celebrity during yesterday's Wicked: For Good debut be arrested or expelled from Singapore.
A viral clip shows the person identified as Johnson Wen shoving aside photographers and charging at Grande while the cast made its way down a promenade accompanied by fans.
Cast member Cynthia Erivo quickly guided the shocked actress away from Mr Wen, who was spotted being escorted out of the premiere by event staff.
Mr Wen posted on Instagram Thursday evening that he was "let go after being arrested", though court documents showed that he was set to attend court on Friday morning. It is unknown if he was charged.
Pattern of Incidents
This is part of a pattern for Mr Wen, who describes himself as a "Controversial Figure", has invaded a performance. His Instagram profile features clips of him interrupting other star-studded functions, including rushing the platform at the pop singer's Sydney show in earlier this year and in a like fashion during The Chainsmokers event in the same location last December.
"There needs to be action applied against him as this is obviously a punishable act," commented an Instagram user, in a message to a video Mr Wen posted of his actions.
"Oh wow so you do this a lot... how aren't you in jail?" one Instagram user wrote.
Supporters Voice Worry Over Ariana's Well-being
Many followers accused Mr Wen for "triggering past anxiety" Grande, who had revealed suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after a devastating incident at the conclusion of her 2017 show in Manchester, resulting in the death of 22 people and injuring many.
"After everything she's faced... including the Manchester attack, you considered it entertaining to rush the barrier?" said a further comment on Instagram.
A number of supporters also questioned event staff at the premiere for not being adequately prepared; while different individuals requested social media platforms to remove Mr Wen's content.
Reaction and Event Details
In footage shared widely, Grande appeared shocked when she was touched by the individual. Her fellow actors Michelle Yeoh and Erivo can be spotted reassuring her while Mr Wen was escorted away by staff.
Grande has remained silent on the event, and the premiere activities proceeded as normal.
Many of supporters had gathered in a sea of green and pink at the Wicked: For Good Asia-Pacific launch in a Singapore mall, including several who had queued for as long as many hours before it started.
The film, to be premiered on November 21, is the second of a dual interpretation of the popular theatrical musical Wicked, which centers on the unlikely friendship between two contrasting characters.
The show itself is a derivative of the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Grande, who acts as the good witch Glinda, was decked out in a champagne pink sparkling outfit at the event while Erivo, who acts as the Elphaba, wore a elegant ensemble embroidered with roses.
They were alongside co-star Jeff Goldblum.
The first movie, Wicked, was the top-earning film of last year in the UK, and earned a dozen Oscar nominations, earning two for outstanding attire and artistic direction.
