The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
