The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
