The Three Lions to Begin Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
The England national team will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the expected entry for a tournament hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not staged an English men’s match since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to stage the England side for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their round of 16 match would be held at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Rally
The event was inaugurated at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were confronted as they entered the venue by around fifty activists, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were held up with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Fixture List
The first match of Euro 2028 will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help connect with a wider spectrum of viewers.
Host Nations
The Irish team are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualification process; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the finals through that route.
Venues and Playoffs
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
