Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to question certain rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
